PostHeaderIcon How fast is the growth of sleep apnea treatment (mainly via CPAP)?

I’m trying to figure out how many people are buying CPAP systems and masks today and how much this is changing.

I see number like 18M people have OSA (up to 50-60M with some type of sleep issue), and the industry is growing at 8.4%, but what’s driving this? Increase diagnosis & treatment, shift demographics, more marginal suffers seeking treatment, or just newer, more expensive equipment?

Any help would be great. Cited sources would be even better!! Thanks!!

Sleep Apnea effects more than 12 million Americans! More over weight people and diabetics have sleep apnea. It usually effects men over 40 who are over weight. There are 3 types of Sleep Apnea:
1.) Obstructive…soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses and closes during sleep.
2.) Central…The brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe.
3.) Mixed…Combination of both of the
above.
You can learn more on the American Sleep Apnea Association website:
www.sleepapnea.org
This whole nation is over weight or diabetic so go figure why everyone has sleep apnea!
Being over weight is the norm now.

PostHeaderIcon difficulty sleeping, getting to sleep and staying asleep?

my boyfriend has a significant amount of trouble falling asleep and says that it often can take him up to two hours to fall asleep. in addition, he often has rather restless sleep which may or may not include fairly vivid dreams or waking up in the middle of the night. in addition, he says that sometimes when he even does get a full night’s amount of sleep he will wake up still feeling tired. so, i was wondering what may be the cause of this inability and what if anything can be done to ease its affects (preferably through natural means, i.e. no prescriptions)?

Stimulus control.
Dont let your boyfriend go to bed unless he is really tired and want to sleep. This will make him associate bed with sleep.

Other means:
- warm milk
- no heavy meals before bed
- no exercise before bed
- no bright or noisy object in the room i.e. clock ….
- moderate amount of alcohol, but this increases wakefullness during the second half of the night
- he can practice meditation i.e. yoga …. practice it before bed

Like bed soaking sweat, how long does this phase last? It’s only been 3 days.

that’s not normal at all, especially given it’s only been 3 days- are you like really craving it? that could be why or maybe it’s just the way your body is responding,, if this continues, you should really see a doctor about it- it’s a problem that cna be fixed easily

PostHeaderIcon Please tell me what cures insomnia!?

What cures insomnia? I know that eating cherries is known to cure insomnia, but is there anything else? (Besides those sleeping pills, of course)

Thanks icon biggrin Please tell me what cures insomnia!?

There is no cure, insomnia is a symptom of disease. You have to find the cause, often insomnia comes from stress, anxiety disorders, or depression. It can also be a result of drinking too much caffiene, smoking, sugar, or any stimulants. Televison and light can keep you from going to sleep at night, but other diseases can cause insomnia. Try all of these tricks and if these do not work see your doctor.

1. Exercise regularly and preferrably 4 hours before bed
2. Do yoga, to practice silencing your mind
3. Cut out ALL caffiene
4. Reduce white sugar
5 Drink more water
6. Go in your bedroom only at bed time, it needs to be a place your brain knows its time to sleep
7. Keep your bedroom very dark, and do not watch tv before bed
8. Have a glass of warm milk
9. Reduce stress in your life

Most of all number 9, stress is the most common cause of insomnia. You can’t get your thoughts to stop racing or your body to relax, you cannot sleep if you cant do those things. Try all of those things and if that doesnt work in a month, see a doctor.

What is the most effective sleep remedy prescription or OTC for severe insomnia?
its been over 30 hours and no matter what I do, my head is achey and my pulse is high. Tried klonopin and doesnt seem to do the trick aside from initially relaxing u. Any good suggestions would be helpful

medication for sleep shouldn’t be taken for very long bur for some us it’s the only way to function..

A small amount of seroquel will make you sleep very well .Also, lunesta, ativan, xanax(my very favorite that works great but gets you addicted quickly, so I had to stop it.) ,klonipin-a longer half life so you don’t have the addiction problem because it doesn’t have that quick withdrawal – restoril, trazadone, ambian which (sleep walking or dangerous to drive)Elavil but it can make you drowsy during the day.

Some of those get you to sleep, but wake you up in a couple of hours. Some have too much of a hypnotic qualities and could be dangerous driving and make you have temporary loss of memory.

klonipin started working better for me when the dr. gave me a prescription to divide into 3 doses during the day so I’m less hyper by the end of the night

. Seroquel puts you out really well but you’ll be tired the next morning until they increase the does to the right amount.

try a warm shower and keep the temperature in you room cool. Keep the room totally dark, turn the clock towards the wall. Put a fan on in your room for some white noise. Count backwards from 100 by 3′s (very boring) or calm down by thinking about a nice vacation on a warm beach in Hawaii. sweet dreams.

PostHeaderIcon What causes the sensation of paralysis and breathing difficulty in sleep?

This happened to me mostly in middle childhood and decreased after age 20 Id like more information please to anyone who possesses it.

difficulty breathing could be a result of sleep apnea. which is a very serious condition where the sleeping (unconscious mind) cannot regulate breathing without being awake.

PostHeaderIcon sleep apnea?

is there anybody out there that have sleep apnea if what treatment do you use

1. You need to have a sleep study done by a sleep specialist.
2. A CPAP or a BiPAP is the only treatment….while losing weight will be suggested…the IMMEDIATE treatment is the CPAP. It’s not that uncomfortable !
3. Breath-Rite strips are useless for someone who REALLY has sleep apnea. And the mis-conception that they help with sleep apnea is not only ignorant; but DANGEROUS !
4. Most throat surgeries won’t help.
5. A person doesn’t have to be overweight to have sleep apnea. There are different kinds of sleep apnea.
6. Sleep apnea can cause many health problems; high blood pressure, and heart problems are just a few. People with sleep apnea can have their drivers’ license, car insurance and car tags revoked if you are not doing your treatments !

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea 3 years ago; at my top weight of 333 pounds. I was averaging 63 events per hour, and had heart problems and high blood pressure from it. I had a gastric bypass, have lost 135 pounds so far; and just had another sleep study last week….NO MORE SLEEP APNEA !!

Please see a sleep specialist and follow their advice !

PostHeaderIcon Any home remedy or cures for insomnia?

Here lately it doesn’t seem to matter what time I goto bed I wake up somewhere between 1-3am. Like earlier I fell asleep between 11-11:30 and was awake again by 1am. Does anyone have a drug free remedy that will help me sleep soundly during the nite. I usually end up falling asleep again around 5-6 am. But this is really wearing me out. Im not sleeping straight through the nite and when I wake up im up for a while.

sleepy time tea works well with a nice warm bath.
don’t eat anything for a couple hours before you’re ready to sleep.
